That's wildly up for debate, as the world is a big place, but it seems to me that every modern invention is pronounced to be the best thing SINCE sliced bread...ergo, sliced bread is the best invention. :0)

Many would probably say that the wheel was the best invention in the world, because it got everything rolling, but, personally, I think that it must be language, without which meaning would not exist, and neither would best, or invention, or world. Or, by the way, war, and death, and hate, etc. so language may also be the worst invention in the world, because when we use it to start war, which is another word, look at what great results we get! Ah, another word with a meaning. Hmmmm!

Agriculture

the move from hunter-gatherers to an agricultural society freed up part of society to work on other problems. Directly led to animal husbandry, domestication of animals, writing and mathematics.

Since it is so important to our society, few think of the basics as inventions. An inventiopn is a breakthrough that changes our way of doing things. To get the important ones, you must go back to the start.

good luck!
