Because they want to keep you informed.
BTW... That question also cost you 5 points.

Because these points are very important to SOME people. They have nothing to say but want those 2 points. They act like its the end of the world

Because some questions are pointless and some people wouldn't 'waste' 5 points asking a pointless question.

You don't NEED to lose 5.
If you pick your own Best Answer you get 3 back
And is 2 points really too much to ask for getting a question answered

I don't know, maybe they think we're morons who haven't figured it out for ourselves. Earlier I asked a question to see if anyone wanted to congratulate me for reaching level 4, and this party-pooper just HAD to say: "Asked a question now, 5 points off and back down to level 3". Does he think I'm stupid? Like I would ask a question straight after making level 4, without having enough points to spare...ARRGH. Sorry for writing you this minor essay, but it just frustrates me!

What's the point of all these points....who cares - not as if there's a big reward for the person with the most :(

When you ask a question, it costs you 5 points.
When you answer a question, you're awarded 2 points.
Yahoo keeps the 3 point profit. So far, they've amassed billions of points, and their financial future has never been brighter.
To service community conscience, Yahoo also doles out a 10 point bonus to 'best answers'. Considering that some questions get 50 or more answers (250 point income), the expenditure for public relations is well spent.
Now you know.
