Hornsby, Collins, Morgan, Biggio, Alomar, Sandberg, Robinson, Carew, Doerr, Fox... can't go wrong with any of them.
There's a couple of defensive wizards I'm leaving out (Mazeroski, White) because, while they might hold a slight edge with the glove, they get buried by the bigger bats listed above.
I'll take Alomar for all-around excellence and impressive durability (though he fell apart quickly at the end), but if someone wants to argue in favor of another player, that's fine.
Hornsby is CLEARLY the best hitter of the bunch.

I agree with Joe Morgan and Rogers Hornsby, but how about Lou (Sweet Lou) Whitaker?
Lou Whitaker played 19 seasons for the Tigers, 18 as their starting second baseman. He played in 2,390 games, collected 2,369 hits, scored 1,386 runs, and drove in 1,084. He launched 244 homers and stole 143 bases, while batting .276 with a .363 OBP. He joined Rogers Hornsby and Joe Morgan as the only second basemen to score 1,000 runs, drive in 1,000 runs, and collect 2,000 hits and 200 homers.

Defensively, Bill Mazeroski. He won eight gold gloves and led the NL in assists nine times. His career fielding average was .983 and he holds the MLB career record for double plays by a second baseman.
Offensively, Eddie Collins. He finished his career with 3,315 hits,1300 RBIs, 744 stolen bases, and a .333 batting average.

Kudos to Esteban with his Quilvio Veras reference. Anyone for Joe Strain?
Seriously though - Rogers Hornsby won Triple Crowns. I give him a slight edge over Joe Morgan and Ryne Sandberg.

I have to say the great Rogers Hornsby.
2 time Triple Crown Winner
2 time NL MVP
Batted over .400 three times
2930 hits. Just 70 shy of 3,000
Career ba of .358

Ryne Sandberg, Cubs. He could do it all: hit for average, power, field, throw, run.
Jackie Robinson, Joe Morgan, Roger Hornsby, many others are up there. But Sandberg was the rock of the Cubs for many years.

Joe Morgan or Ryne Sandberg come to mind without looking up any stats. I love the way Joe would flap his arm right before the pitcher threw the ball when he was batting.

Roberto Alomar
Jackie Robinson was a great man. He changed the game and worked to make the world a better place. But I gotta go with Roberto: He could hit and he had an unbelievable glove.
