What suggestions do you have for a budding numismatist? What are some good starter coins to look for? What should I be looking for as far as current coins go (may go up in value later)? Where can I find rare or old coins for low prices? What can I do with all the foreign money I keep getting? Please include anything else that you think will be helpful.

Start collecting the presidential dollar proofs. They will be issued for a period of about 10 years and will go up in value.

I have been collecting the state quarters for 9 years. One year to go to complete the collection.

When it comes to world coins a one from each country is a good idea and there is even a collecting group with that name. World coins can be an inexpensive way to learn about the world as well as it's history. Worry less about how much a coin is worth and more on having fun collecting and in the long run you will do better than most collectors. For U.S. coins get what is called a Red Book a Guide to U.S. Coins. they come out each year and a spiral bound one is $14.95 I think. You need not get one each year. The pricing is good only as a guide but it holds a wealth of information. Price guides come out in Coins and Coinage magazine. Get one a month, they are retail and tend to be a little high. You must learn about coins before you can get he better buys. You need to know more than the dealer does about the coins you want. there are a lot of suggestions I could give but space is limited here. You need to read up on coins and see where your interest lie. if I can be of further assistance email me here.

I try to use the same teller at the bank, and always ask for "cool money". She saves what she gets and always tries to hook me up. Sometimes I end up with rolls of Suzy B's or $50 in $2 bills, so I try to share the wealth and get this stuff back in circulation. I also look at my change every night and pull out the wheat pennies and the occasional buffalo head nickel. The main part is to collect the part that is fun for you. I don't collect on the hopes that these will be valuable some day, I collect because I like stuff like the silver dollar I got in my xmas stocking from my grandparents.
