We have a subtraction case here.

In order to work with fractions, denominators must be the same.

Your fractions have different denominators.

In order to create same denominators, we must find the LCD or lowest common denominator.

1/2 - 3/8 =

What is the BIGGEST number that 2 and 8 can evenly be divided into?

How about 8?

8 divided by 2 = 4

8 divided by 8 = 1

We now multiply 4 and 1 by their respective numerators.

8 divided by 2 = 4 and 4 times 1 = 4.

And

8 divided by 8 = 1 and 1 times 3 = 3

We now have this new fraction with the same denominator:

(4 - 3)/8 =

4 minus 3 = 1, right?

Final answer: 1/8

1/2-3/8
Change 1/2 to 4/8 by multiplying both top and bottom by 4.
4/8-3/8 = 1/8 since the denominators both now = 8, we can just subtract the numerators and put the result over the common denominator.
