the spelling of my name is incorrect on my BC and they are telling me that I have to get a lawyer to fix it. I live in SC. Why can't I just do this myself? If I can, where do I find the forms to send into court to fix.

You're better off with the lawyer. Even with one it can be an uphill battle sometimes.

Before getting a lawyer, you may find it worth your time to contact the office of your local state legislator. As a former district office employee, I can tell you that a large majority of the work done in the office is serving as a liason between constituents and the bureaucracy of the state government. Explain your situation to one of the staff members and they should be able to point you in the right direction. Issues such as the one you are encountering are not uncommon. Contacting the office is free, and if they are able to get the problem sorted out, you will have saved quite a bit in attorney's fees. Best of luck!

I had the same problem and went to the County Clerk's office to ask how to fix it. All I had to do was apply for an amended birth certificate and pay the fees. This happened a few years back and it could be different now. Check with the clerk and find out.
