Every time i turn the pump on high, water starts coming out of the backwash spout. When i have the pump on low, everything is ok. I need to shock the pool and i need the pump to be on high. Can anyone that knows about this tell me what could be wrong.

Pump does not need to be on high to shock the pool, you are confusing the high and discharge, there is no high setting on a filter for the pool pump. just the filter and the backwash to clean the filter. Best way is to mix the shock with water stir then toss in

If you mean by the "backwash spout" the pipe that is supposed to take the backwash water away from the pool, it sounds like there's a problem with your main selector valve. These are the big ones, usually on top of the filter chamber. It may need a new O-ring, the spring holding the valve plates in place may be faulty, or there may be some sand or other foreign object caught in the interface between the plates.

You will need to block the water off from the pump assembly unless the selector valve is above the water level in the pool. Disassemble the valve (it's usually held together with bolts) and inspect it. Clean it thoroughly, including the O-ring (remove it). If the O-ring gives off black powder, it's due for a new one. If it's still shiny, and there are no breaks in it, it's probably OK. Be sure to put a layer of fresh grease (be sure to use one designed for rubber rings) on it. Examine the spring that holds the faceplates together - it should be quite strong. If it feels weak, it may need replacing, but take it into your pool store to be sure. You could also take the top part of the valve in for inspection.

When you put everything back together, tighten the bolts carefully in sequence a little at a time so as not to put stress on any one of them or on one side of the valve. Try out your pump's high speed again after all the air is blown out of it. if you still have the backwash leak, you may need a whole new valve. Talk to your pool shop people.

I think I agree with waduck... He is pretty much right on. We just went through this with my in ground. But it was leaking ALOT when ever the pump was on. After much panic and a lot of water to keep refilling the thing I found a web site that talks about pool leaks. It said turn it on and look and see if water was still coming out the backwash hose when it was supposed to filter. $7.00 gasket.. Still scared of that water bill coming.. the link is below about leaks

Good luck

if you have a D. E. filter it sounds like to me that the spider gasket inside of the valve is leaking. some pool repair people try to install new gaskets with pool liner glue. in my experience this fix does not last very long. you are better off in the long run to replace the whole multiport valve . if this is the type of valve that you have. when you put the pump on HIGH it puts more pressure against the valve and therefore causing a leak

Consult the guy who installed your pool.
I think either there is a leak or the guy who installed your system put in the wrong valve. one that s too weak to handle the pressure. If you live near the beach and your warranty is already expired, try opening the vario-valve and check if all the rubber gaskets are intact and clean it out of any sand
