All Quiet on the Western Front. I know it is an old one but it vividly captures in inhumanities of war. It gives a good characterization of a normal soldier and how he perceives the war. It is an anti-war film. The battle scene are incredible for its day. The film is in black and white which I think adds to the somber affect of the war on a soldier.
