I am planning to attend college this fall and as a major, I chose Psychology and the degree program is for the BA. I am planning to become a dentist or a pediatrician. My question is, if i am aiming for become those professions, does the BA help at all? Or should I have picked the BS instead? Or does it not really matter? Also..would I be able to change the degree program?

thanks for your time :]

I don't understand why you would major in psychology when you are planning a career that will require pre-med.

The primary difference between a BA and BS is the amount of the units that are in core classes. BS requires more core units.

You can always change your degree program. Chances are high that some of your units will not be transferable or not apply toward the new program.

You can get a professional degree in anything as long as you have a bachelors. Most professional programs dont even care what the bachelors is in, it just might affect the classes you have to take. If you are going towards dentist or pediatrician, make sure you fulfill the entry requirements and then you can get your bachelors in anything that you want. Talk to the counselors on campus and they can provide you with more detailed information that is specific towards your school. Also, you can always change your degree program, it just might mean that some classes that you have taken do not count and you need to take more.

You can be an English major and still take the required science courses and apply for Med/Dentist school. However, if you take the BS route, you may have more resources at your reach. You will probably be with other students hoping to go to Med or Dentist school. You can easily change your degree program. Don't worry about that. Start to take the required science courses to try them out.

Good luck!

Any major and bachelor's degree is acceptable, as long as you also take the science courses you need in order to prepare for the MCAT or the DAT. The advantage to the BS is that since it is a bachelor's of science, you would automatically have a science-heavy schedule. With the BA, you may need to make sure you take the other classes as electives, but it can still be done.
