First of all, destroying the hard drives doesn't mean you have to destroy the entire computer. I think you are confusing the word "hard drive" for that big box you plug your monitor and mouse into. That's not the hard drive, that's the computer. The hard drive is a device inside the computer which stores data. You can destroy it without destroying the rest of the machine. That being said, yes, you can erase all the information off of it without actually destroying it if you want to. There is plenty of tools available for free on the internet, just go to Yahoo and type in "free hard drive erasing software". You can also physically destroy the drive. Remove it from the computer, and destroy it as you see fit (personally I like blowing them up, but thats just me) Just however you decide to destroy it, make sure the metal platters inside are destroyed, or at least de-magnetized.

Remove the hard drive, change the jumper to the Slave setting (should be shown on a label on the Hard drive), attach the drive as a second hard drive in another computer and format it - several times, preferably. For proper security, you really need an encryption program that will overwrite the disc a number of times.
Is the hard disc too small to consider keeping it and using as secondary storage in another PC?

Open the old computer with a screwdriver of course and get the old hard drive, install that old harddrive on your current desktop, boot your computer and full format the old harddrive.

All your financial stuff are deleted plus you have added disk space :D

Take the hard drive out (black box about the size of a paperback) open the trunk of your car and stick it to your subwoofer's magnet. Remove the following week. It should be completely fudged and safe to toss in the trash. Give away the rest of the computer.

Hammer, for that destruction side of a person...
Strong magnet if you don't want to clean up the mess after destruction
The bath tub, water and hard drive are not good friends.

Open it up, remove the hard drive, it should be under the CD or floppy drive, and smash it with a hammer or drill holes in the disc part.

Unplug the hard drive and take drill with metal bit and drill two holes through it or take the hard drive apart and remove the disc and break it or "my favorite" get some saftey glasses, gloves and a 10 lb. sledge hammer and take out all your stress.

"Financial info"? ;) I'm just teasing. Take it to a shooting range and use it as practice, I'm dead serious. I just read this a few weeks ago, this is one of the few ways to guarantee it's completely destroyed. Remember, they can survive fires, so don't take that route, don't throw it out, because that doesn't destroy it. Shoot it to bits, relieves anger and gets the job done.

Take out the hard drive & fix it with other computer & format it twice. That will permanently delete the data.
