Oh wow. Some of these answers just wanna make me cry! No offense. A furry is someone who identifies themselves as an animal and is given human like characteristics or in other words, personified. Such as myself. I identify myself as a black scaled dragon with deep gold eyes. When I'm in the Furry world, as I and others like to call, we're our own animal doing everything a human would do. I'm a furry because its new, its fun, and its very creative.

For as long as I have known the Furry subculture, I have been hearing this question over and over. Simply put, the Furry society is not easy to explain, because it means several things. In a defining sense, a Furry refers to a person who enjoys anthropomorphic art. Some take it to an extent of Fursuiting (which is putting on a suit similar to a school mascot), and going to Anthrocons (similar to Anime Cons, but for Furries). As Ive seen it though, there are really a lot of different reasons why people become furries.
The first kind of furry (also making up the majority of the Furries at Anthrocons) are the people who dress up as animals just for the fun of it. To entertain. Mostly they are just having fun with the whole thing, and not taking it too seriously.
The second kind of furry is the more spiritual side. These people are strongly tied to an animal. Basically they believe that they are an animal of some sort trapped in another body. To them, its more of a lifestyle rather than just a fun hobby.
Those two are the most common types of people I've seen and met online and such.
The furry community are not very open about their furriness however, because over the years since the whole thing started when some D&D player decided to cosplay an anthromorphic character, the furry community has been bashed by the media, the internet, and the general community at large. With such infamous scenes as the MTV Video and the CSI episode, people were given the impression that the furry community was all about sex, which simply isn't the case.
Luckily, in recent years, the furbashing has been toning down and the furry community has become a large part of the internet. Search engines will still bring up dirty images of furs when searched due to the wrong impression set way back, but for the most part, the furries are no longer attacked as much as they used to.

A furry is a member of the "Furry Fandom". A furry usually has an interest dealing with animals and anthros- or animals given human characteristics. Unfortunately, furries are often given a bad image that I do not believe to be true in most cases.
How much a person is into the fandom and what they like varies. Some are in it for sexual reasons. Some like the art part of it. Other may have an interest in fursuits- a mascot styled costume of some animal that they identify with.
I don't know whether to call myself "furry" or not, but I do share some characteristics of those who do identify themselves as a furry. I like the fursuits/mascots, animals, identify myself as a coydog, etc. but I am not into the sexual part of it. Dunno, mabye I am a furry....

A furry is a person who identify with an animal, right? Their identity is closely tied with an animal, I mean. I met this babyfurry once. I think he's a little different than what you're talking about, because he identified with a kitten, not a full grown cat. Did he have an impact on me? Well, we weren't really close or anything, but he was a nice guy. A little different, but nice.

Furry is my dog when I stroke her. Furry is her tail as it wags back and forth when she spies food. Furry is her hair tangeling in the wind. Furry is her paw when she rests it on your hand.
