After doing some research, I have determined to replace the motor with a like type inline 4 or 6 cyl engine. Seems that the design of the merc 470 leaves alot to be desired with the water pump - cam seal problems and lack of available parts. So I will remove this engine and replace with another type/manufacturer. What would be a good direct bolt up motor to install in the 170-200 HP range? Closed cooling would be good, since that is what is going on now. The boat has the stock tranny/outdrive attached to the present 470. I do not want to change these.....they are fine. I also do not want to spend thousands on doing the motor change-out, since the boat is almost 30 years old (in great shape) and I will sell later this summer for a larger boat. I don't want to sell this for any more than a reasonable amount without tearing my butt. Any ideas?

The Merc 470 was re-designed in 1985 and called the 190MR. I was always a fan of the GM 250 inline 6 for a boat motor. The gearing in your outdrive is probably wrong for that motor, though. If you are keeping the same outdrive, better off to stick closest to what you have now.
