If you have any sort of personal relationship with him, chances are you won't be paid.

When I left my job to take care of my parents, I was their full time caregiver for 10 years. The most I could have gotten was "respite care", which would have been a person to take over for a few hours per week, so that I could have a break. And this would have been covered under Veteran's, not Old Age Pension.

The government will probably look at your already being in place, helping him, UNPAID, as your willingness to carry on in that capacity. Whatever you manage to get out of them will have to be fought hard for. (I didn't bother.)

Don't forget to make a trip to the Social Insurance office that administer the Old Age Pensions and Supplements, with your elderly friend, and find out exactly what paid care he is entitled to receive. You may need a letter from his family doctor explaining that he is unable to take care of himself safely anymore.

Good luck.

I am disabled too and my friend lives with me. She helps me in many ways. However I can wash my own clothes and take a shower. I can even cook for my self most days, however I cannot drive anymore. In fact I am scared to even get in a car. Because one whiplash I am dead.
We have talked and If this is long term I am leaveing her my home. I don't even have disability yet. I have to file again.
Is that something this elderly person would do for you taking care of them. Leave you their home?
My children told me that is was OK with them if I leave her the house.
I can't pay her and I am checking out if she can write me off on her taxes too. If she didn't take care of me I would be in a lot of trouble. So sit down with this person, they may make it worth it. Of course if you need money now I don't know what to tell you. My friend works. I sleep while she works, most of the time. But for the last 4 days I have felt GREAT! Like I am healed.
Good Luck
May the Lord bless you, and keep you: make his face shine upon you, and be gracious unto you: lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.
