Not go to pier 39 or fishermans wharf. Walk along the Embarcadero from the Ball Park all the way to Ghiradelli Square. Walk along Crissy Field in the Presidio ( actually if you are a real walker you can continue from the Embarcadero). Go to the Palace of the Legion of Honor, Grace Cathedral and Post St shopping near Union Square

We only venture into the city a few times a year and we act like total tourists. Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39, Ferry Building, the mall at 5th and Market, Chinatown, cable car rides. The Stinking Rose is great if you love garlic. There's a great wine bar a couple blocks and down an alley from the TransAmerica building and it has great panini. There's also a great dim sum place on Geary towards the water. (Can't remember the name, but I can drive there.) We're natives, but doing the touristy thing is a blast. And take pictures of the sea lions at Pier 39.

go to Hyde Street Pier and tour the historic boats on display. Wander through Fisherman's Wharf.
Avoid Pier 39. Walk down Union Street and window shop. Find hole-in-the-wall restaurants that only the cognoscenti go to.

Hands down Fisherman's Wharf Bouillabaisse. It's the combination of all the flavors of the pacific coast and the atmosphere is real. Overall great experience.

Go for a bike ride in GG park on a Sunday afternoon. The city closes vehicular traffic on that day. It is great way to get some excercise and relax before you have to start your work week, and it is cheap.
