I have a problem with my Ryukin (fancy goldfish) which I have had for over 18 months now & has always been healthy.
He has recently become quite bloated & appears to be gasping for air. He also has a long stringy thing hanging out of his anus. It is not like his usual excretia as it is sort of transparent with white bits in it.
Has anyone got any idea what the problem might be?

He sounds constipated, but the white coloration of his waste is a classic sign of a bacterial infection in his digestive tract. I would strongly suggest you treat the tank with an antibiotic such as Furanace or Furan-2. If those aren't available to you, treat with tetracycline (Maracyn TC is one brand). Also and equally important, feed your fish medicated food that contains antibiotcs. This is sold in most pet shops and pet superstores, just be sure to get the antibiotic formula and not the parasite formula.

Best of luck with him.
