I have a male Siamese fighter fish (or at least I think it's a boy) and I've had him for about a year now. I've been feeding him 2 pellets per day (but sometimes I forget) of those Beta Bites because that's how much my mom said to feed it. But on the other hand, my friend has one too and he feeds his fish 2-4 per week, and he's had it for 4 years!! My fish is healthy and colourful (it's a deep blue and red) and it swims a lot and looks great, but I can't help wondering if I'm really feeding him the right amount!

There is no magic number as you can tell by all of the varied answers. Different fish will eat different amounts depending on temperature of the water, age and size of the container, among other reasons. Feed your fish as much as he will eat in 3-4 minutes twice a day and he will be just fine. For best results feed him pellets once a day and some other food like bloodworms or mosquito larvae the other time.

I have had two beta fish that lived for 5 years-I fed them 3-4 pellets once a day.

I feed my beta about 3-4 pellets per week as well, and he has been alive for almost 3 years now. It seems like such a small amount, but you have to consider how big a fish's stomach is. The bowl upkeep is a lot better too, because they do not poop as much when they are not fed as much.

I would hate to have some of the above people be my owner if I were a fish! MM is correct. I feed mine twice a day usually 4-6 pellets and then every other day I feed them bloodworms. I also feed them the occasional fly. I only fast them if they have signs of being constipated.

Beta fish are very endurant. They can survive almost anything. I use to have a beta fish and I usually remembered to give it five pellets a week. I think thats a really good number. I fed it a little more before we went on vacation though. You gotta remember that. Hope he/she survives many years!

One rule of thumb is to daily give your fish only as much as he will eat in 10 minutes.

If you give him too much food, it sours the water, and most people keep a beta in a very small bowl, so they are very intolerant of that.

Two pellets a week ought to be plenty.
