1) Have a well balanced team
Believe it or not, the most fundemental part of a great team is having it very well balanced. This is to say have Pokemon that cover most or all types with moves that can cover their weaknesses (ex. Garchomp has a 4x weakness against ice, make him learn a fire move to take care of it).

2) Have a team that suits your fighting style.
The second most fundemental part of a great team is having a team that will suit your fighting style. If you love to tank, don't get Pokemon that are low in hp or both defences, get those that are high in hp and both defences. I personally love to go all out and sweep, however, be careful when you sweep, as Focus Sash is a very common item and prevents sweeping.

3) Have Pokemon with good natures.
Pokemon with natures that suit them well are highly important, for example, if you have a Shuckle with a nature that lowers defence to increase attack or speed, it will put you at a disadvantage as Shuckle's best stats are Defence and Special Defence (a whooping 230 in each)

4) Have them hold good items.
Hold items are really essencial for success online. The best is to combine that Pokemon's ability with an item that will boost the ability further. For example, a Linoone with gluttony might seem bad as it eats berries quicker, however, if you use belly drum and equip Linoone with a Sitrus berry, it will lose half health, maximize attack (400% attack) AND gain some health.

5) EV train
If you are a perfectionist, you have to EV train, as it will maximize your Pokemon's stats. EV training is when you fight Pokemon which has a high stat of something, i.e. Zubat has high speed, it will increase your Pokemon's speed. You can only reach a certain level of EVs, and giving them vitamins will increase an EV by one point.

That's what I do and I'm pretty good online, I just don't battle often.

I haven't played any pokemon for a bit (Latest was Ruby/Saphire) but in every single pokemon game I've played, a full dragon team is the best. Few weaknesses and can use moves of many different types.
