i think he was an astronaut and he was slowly melting,he had chunks of flesh stuck to trees etc.

...you're talking about the icky 1977 sci-fi horror film, entitled "The Incredible Melting Man", with goopy, drippy special make up effects by Rick Baker and Greg Cannom. It was a quite fun and campy film to see, especially when originally release on the big screen; although voted as one of the top 50 worst films ever made (it wasn't really THAT bad, in my opinion), it was still an interesting remake of "First Man in Space" (1959), and in some respects, the same year's "The Hideous Sun Demon".

Unfortunately, the film has yet to see release on DVD, and the VHS tape (distributed by Vestron Pictures) has long been out of print (I know, 'cause I've virtually worn out MY tape!!!)
