You have to apply for a marriage license in most states ahead of time, unless you are getting married in Las Vegas, where you can drive up in your car.
The license takes a couple weeks to come in, and then it is only good for 30 days, at least in my state. They do a check to make sure that you are already not married.
Just go to the courthouse and apply. Both of you should go together and answer the questions on the application. It's a simple process and costs a small amount of money.

You should call your county records keeper to get the procedure where you live, but yes, you have to apply for a license first.

Sometimes a discount may be offered if you and your fiance have taken some sort of counseling course (with a minister or something of that nature). Depending on where you live an HIV test may be required first. Sometimes you can apply for the marriage an get married in the same day. That just depends on when the magistrate judges perform ceremonies. So check with the county records keeper to be sure.

I can tell you what happens in NY. You apply for a marriage license and on it, they ask you where the ceremony is to be performed and when. There is a box to check "City Hall/City Court" and on it a line that says "Will you need an appointment with a Justice of the Peace?" If you fill that out, the clerk will direct you as to how to make the appointment and as far as I know you should be able to do it within two weeks.

You just go to the courthouse with your future spouse. Tell them you wish to get married. They will give you a marriage a marriage certificate which will be good for 30 days. You will have thirty days to get married or you will need to renew the certificate. Next you will make arrangement with the judge who will marry you. You will get your official marriage license in the mail in about three weeks.

You do need a marriage license, but after you get it, you can get marrieed. That is your certificate and proof of marriage. The judge will sign it, you sign it with your new name, your husband will sign it and a witness from the court will sign it. It really isn't a big deal. However, some states require a blood test still, so you might need to call and see about it. Good Luck.

No matter where you live, it starts by going to the court house (city, County..whatever district you live in) and apply for a license, pay the fee and one is issued then and there. Most municipalities/counties have a wait period, usually 3 days. A blood test is usually required...done to protect both parties...Syph and HIV tests are done. No one is informed about HIV, but Syph is a county notification if positive.
After the blood test, then license, and wait period, you are free to marry wherever you choose...court house, church, JP, or whatever.
If you are this ignorant of marriage, I suggest that, if you were getting married, you might want to wait a few more months to find out all you can. Good luck

Getting the license is no big deal. In many states, you can get the license the same day you get married. We got married in TN and got the license about 2 hours before we got married. Call your county clerk and ask. They will tell you exactly what to do. It's no biggie. :)

Good luck! :)

Hello.

Yes. Go to your local courthouse.. WITH your fiance, and apply. They will let you know when it is in, then... you can go there and do the deed. You can get info online - I am sure your courthouse has a site. Or call.

Good Luck

Are you kidding?

I cannot believe in this day and age that you didn't know you had to have a marriage license....are you 12??

Call the county clerk where you live and ask them about the procedure.

P.S. YOU can't married at the courthouse by yourself, you know....you have to have someone who wants to marry you, too. Just a thought. (you never say "we" here, you only refer to yourself.....)
