It wasn't really about Maria today. Maybe she could have palyed better but she did put up a good fight. Venus wore a champions visor and was not going to lose. A question that was posed earlier asked if Maria is just overrated. I think she disserves a lot of the praise but even when you consider the things that people say about her on yahoo answers, very little is about her tennis. Even more dissapointing is that a lot of people seem to believe in her tennis because of her looks. While none of this is Maria's fault. One has to wonder about the real merits of her game. I think that she is a great competitor but we will see if in a few years if she'll prove herself to be a pillar in the sport or just as an up-and-comer who had the 'energy' to will a couple titles without the talent and determination to maintain them. She has shown some smarts in tennis but she will have to grow and adapt to the fact that both Williams sisters are quite smart and adaptable too.

She lost 1-6, 3-6 to Venus Williams.

She was playing decently well, not her best, but still decently well. This lost was not so much her fault, Venus was just too good today. Venus got about 80% of her first serves in, and the serves were regularly 120+ MPH, even higher speed than most of the men!

She was also intimidated by Venus, I think. Although she has a 3-1 record against Venus, Venus crushed her in 2005 at Wimbledon. Venus was standing inside the baseline, ready to attack Maria's serves, and thats what caused Maria to double fault so much. And once she double faulted alot, she started slowing down your second serves, allowing Venus to attack with the return. When you look at how each of them compare, Venus beats her in almost every category.

1. Speed - the three fastest women in recent Tennis are Kim Clisters, Justine Henin, and Venus Williams. Maria is perhaps the worst mover in the Top 10. Today, Maria hit some powerful shots that would have been winner to any other opponent, but Venus ran it down and kept the rally going.

2. Power - Venus continually pushes Maria back behind the baseline with really powerful groundstrokes and serves. When both are power players, the one with the most power and speed wins.

3. Volleying - I think this one is really obvious.

The problem is, Venus often goes through very bad days when she does not play very well. Unfortunately for Maria, today was not one of those day.

rksu747:
You don't get to be world #1 or #2 based on looks. Clearly she is a major talent. What will be telling from here on is how her shoulder recovers and if she regains her focus.

There's a great article about her performance today "After this obliteration today, it seems reasonable to ask whether Sharapova’s game is in some kind of mini-crisis. After all, she has yet to win a title this year and she is carrying a chronic shoulder problem with her serving arm – a problem that is so severe she requires two-and-a-half hours’ treatment daily, whether she has played a match or not." - at the link below

Both Venus and Maria are power player but if you compare everything about them Venus over power her. The only thing she has a slight advantage with is her back hand
Forehand- Venus
Backhand- Maria
Serve- Venus
Volley- Venus
Footwork- Venus

I think she is recovering from a shoulder injury and it doesn't help that she was up against Venus. She was nervous because she knew when she is up against Venus she has to bring her A game and she just got choked. Too bad i was expecting a better game.

Why is she even out there she dosen't look like she wants to play and she certainly don't need the money. probably shows up because she is so much better looking than most of those beasts playing today and you know who they are.

She lost but I couldn't quit watching all 6'2" of her incredible body. I haven't watched tennis in a long time until today.

She just keeps choking. She's consistent, year round, but hits these walls against other elite players.
Looks like Justine is gonna take it, eh?
