I grew up a country boy that not too many people wanted. I worked the farms with a few other guys in the same boat until I was 18 and joined the Navy 15 years ago. My retirement is set, my bills are paid and I own land back there on the river. I'm only 34 and all I think about is living my life on that river in peace and happiness. Settle down with a little cutie, lay in my hammock and watch the water go by with a yellow lab nearby.

I'm a vet so insurance is covered if I have trouble finding work. Can somebody talk some sense in me?

What the hell are you waiting for? Go, boy go! It sounds like a dream. If you have all the means to do it - than just do it. You have to know by now money doesn't buy happiness, so live the dream!

It sounds like you just answered your own question in your question. You are asking what people think is more important money or happiness. In your question you mention the salary figure compared to enjoying life again. It is obvious that you are not enjoying your life right now and you are considering going back to a life that you enjoy. Life is way to short not to be where you want to be. You have put in your share of hard work and I think now is the time that you decide how you want to reward yourself for all that hard work. You don't have to retire at this age because you would just end up being bored after awhile. You could always open a part time practise in Ky and still enjoy the peaceful life on the hammock by the river. Who says you can't have both? Not me.

Well, I am not sure if you want to go back because if you do then why do you not want to quit? Maybe your just not ready yet and should work a bit more so you don't feel like your missing anything. Do you have a cutie yet? If not work on that and your home on the land back in Ky getting everything ready for your retirement. Start small by taking vacations to your future retirement home....If all else fails pass the 6fig job to me and I can run the business while you take in easy down south...lol! Best Wishes

omg!!! i wish i was a bit younger. i learned a long time ago that material things can't make you happy.

if you want to go back to KY and all of your responsibilities are met. THEN BY ALL MEANS GO!!! enjoy the river...drifting, fishing, skinny dipping or whatever you want to do.

get up in the morning and live life like it's your LAST DAY. do everything you have ever wanted to do and lay down with a smile and no regrets. whether it's in a tent or in a mansion. what's the difference?...when you really think about it.

YOU CAN TAKE THE BOY OUT OF THE COUNTRY BUT YOU CAN'T TAKE THE COUNTRY OUT OF THE BOY!!!

let's go bass fishin :) :) :)

If you joined the Navy at 18, you enlisted. And even if you're an officer now, you've been in the Navy only 15 years. You do not have a "six figure job."

CharlieT, My friend just read what you wrote then do it ! I live in a sleepy town in Illinois,I stayed while most of the friends that I grew up with went to college then to a city to work . Big bucks are not worth sacrificing your roots or your peace of mind ! I may not have many things, but I have my family, old friends, memories and home !

Sounds like you have the perfect life planned...Go get it! Why stay somewhere when it seems like your heart is already back in KY. At 34, you still have many good years to enjoy your dream.

Have fun!

have you thought, maybe, that country needs a vet by that land out back on the river? maybe you are meant to follow your heart and study a different aspect of animal life.? Maybe you need a year long sabbatical to think it over? you make alot of sense to me, it appears you need to listen a little closer to what your own heart desires and needs. and.... why let that quiet land go to waste year after year? if you have the reserves in cash available there is sense in your idea of happiness... for now at least, right?

I grew up the same way, I'd go nuts if I had to leave the country. Plus KY is a beautiful state, hard to leave.

GO FOR IT! If you don't like that 'life' when you have it, you are still young enough to move to someplace else and live a 'different' sort of life ... but you won't 'know' whether you'll really 'like it' until you 'do it' ... and since you can, doing it NOW instead of later is the way to go.
