First, make sure your new cartridges are fitted correctly and in the right slots in the printer's cradle. (sorry, you probably did that already) and remove all tape covering the jets. I have forgotten this at times but I get an error message like "insert or replace cartridge"
You dont say which printer it is but some have a setting in their "toolbox" or preferences which allows you to reset the ink levels when new cartridges are installed.
Also, try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for your printer.
Finally, with modern printers, if you dont use the approved manufacturers cartridges and use recycled ones or "clones" then the printer may report this kind of error.

Are you sure you pulled the tape off of the contacts on the cartridges? Even a little bit that is left on there will some times cause this. Also, if you don't have exactly the correct cartride for the printer this will happen. Have you tried to run an alignment with the new cartridges? You may also need to unistall and reinstall the printer. This will help sometimes too. Good luck!

sometimes the printer memory or programming gets stuck (I call it). I unplug it, the cables from the computer, the power, all of it, leave it unplugged for a minute or two, then plug it back it in, it will reset itself and usually clears what is stuck. Make sure all your plastic covers are off the ink cartridges and they're the right cartridges.
I have also gotten bunk-cheap-generic cartridges before that wouldn't register and had to replace them. Hope it helps. When all else fails check your instruction booklet to make sure it's not a common error for that machine that has a fix in the book. ?

Some replacement cartridges come with a tape across the back, usually yellow, & not the tape over the jets. If you leave the tape on they will show as empty to your PC. Remove the tape. If thats not the case, go to your printer settings, right click the printer and select printing preferences, do all the tests, alignment, print test etc.

Are you using Vista? If so, go to the printer website for compatible drivers.
When you installed the printer did you remember to not plug it in until it said to on the screen?
Did you take the tape off the ink cartridges?

This maybe a dumb question but did you remove the seals off of the cartridges before installing? If so, and still reports the problem, take it back to point of purchase and get a replacement.

If you just bought the printer then take it back to the store and get a refund or exchange it as it it faulty. Otherwise phone phone the printer's manufacturer and tell them the whole problem and they will help you straight away. Or check the user's manual of the printer to see if it has any answers to your question.

Try using the printing troubleshooter via windows. Try turning it off for 30 seconds and then turning it back on.
