Try to go into safe mode. I don't know what else to try. If you have your windows disc, I think it will let you do a repair, but it depends on which version you have.

Try this to start

To start the computer in safe mode
You should print these instructions before continuing. They will not be available after you shut your computer down in step 2.
Click Start, click Shut Down, and then, in the drop-down list, click Shut down.
In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart, and then click OK.
When you see the message Please select the operating system to start, press F8.
Use the arrow keys to highlight the appropriate safe mode option, and then press ENTER.
If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access using the arrow keys, and then press ENTER.
Notes

In safe mode, you have access to only basic files and drivers (mouse, monitor, keyboard, mass storage, base video, default system services, and no network connections). You can choose the Safe Mode with Networking option, which loads all of the above files and drivers and the essential services and drivers to start networking, or you can choose the Safe Mode with Command Prompt option, which is exactly the same as safe mode except that a command prompt is started instead of the graphical user interface. You can also choose Last Known Good Configuration, which starts your computer using the registry information that was saved at the last shutdown.
Safe mode helps you diagnose problems. If a symptom does not reappear when you start in safe mode, you can eliminate the default settings and minimum device drivers as possible causes. If a newly added device or a changed driver is causing problems, you can use safe mode to remove the device or reverse the change.
There are circumstances where safe mode will not be able to help you, such as when Windows system files that are required to start the system are corrupted or damaged. In this case, the Recovery Console may help you.
NUM LOCK must be off before the arrow keys on the numeric keypad will function.

I'd suggest you do a repair of windows. Switch on your PC and immediately start hitting on the Del or Delete key until the BIOS (blue screen) comes up. Enter in Advanced BIOS Features. Select First Boot Device, press enter and select CD-Rom Drive. Accept. Then press esc, then F10, or select the Save & Exit Setup option, and write Y and press enter. Your PC will restart at this point. When it does, insert your Windows XP CD in the drive, then restart PC again. The CD will load and you will be told via a black screen that Setupis inspecting your computer's hardware configuration... From then on , follow the instructions at the bottom of your screen, which will now be blue. If you have a realtively new BIOS version, you won't even have to do that. In the end, you'll come to a screen where you'll be given 3 options: To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R and a third option telling you how to quit installation. Press R. and follow the on-screen instructions.

Turn off your pc and when it starts again keep hitting F8 it should give the opportunity to start it in safe mode or last good configuration. Try one and then the other, if neither work
Try to recover a saved restore point. I that doesn't work you may need to do a repair. If you have your original Windows CD put it in and do a repair. If that doesn't work you can try reinstall the windows. go through the process of installing chose UPGRADE then you will save your data.

If none of that works you will need to wipe your PC and do a full install losing everything

hope this helps

You need your operating system's CD. You have to put in the CD, disconnect any USB devices, then restart your computer. When it says press any key to boot from the CD, hit enter. From this point on you will have to wait a few mins then you will get a screen that says "to set up windows XP now hit enter" so you hit enter. Then you have to agree to the licence agreement by hitting F8. Then on the next screen you will be asked if you want to repair, hit R to repair. The repair will take up to 40 mins. That should do it. But You need the system CD.

Turn you computer off totally.

Turn in back on and then tap on the F8 key continuously.

When you get to the advanced options menu, choose Last Known Good Configuration using your arrow keys and press enter.
