the car is still running hot, just replaced expansion tank since mine had a crack in it so it over heated. after replacing the tank i have noticed that it is still running hot so i let it cool and the tank is empty again. How long until the radiator fills so it will start running normal?

Did you bleed the radiator?

Right next to the top hose next to the filler cap, there is a bleed valve, which can be undone by a large flat-blade screwdriver or a quarter (it fits perfectly).

You should fill the system up, start your engine, open filler cap (while it's still cold), undo this bleed valve (it's plastic, do not over tighten or it will break), wait until coolant fluid emerges from this valve (radiator is filled), then close it. Fill up expansion tank again, close filler cap. You should see your coolant being recirculated back into the expansion tank near the top of the filler cap area before you close the filler cap.

If you are still losing coolant and you don't see visible drips below your engine, you have a bigger problem. Coolant is leaking into your engine - possibly due to a damaged head gasket or even more serious; the block itself.

Another thing to keep in mind, with the engine running you should be able to see the coolant circulating. Many BMW 6 cyl engines came equipped with a water pump that has a plastic impellar. It is very common to see the impellar break free from the shaft, and while the water pump turns without a problem, the coolant is not circulated. If the vehicle heats up at idle or while stopped but cools back down while driving this is a good place to start.

When the engine is cold add coolant until the coolant gets up to the cold (kalt) line on the expansion tank. There is a plastic bleed screw located right next to the fill cap. Loosen it. Set temperature controls to warm and turn the car to ON position (do not start the car). Slowly add coolant until it bleeds out of the bleed screw, then tighten it. Close everything back up and start the engine. Run until it is warm, then turn it back off. After the engine has cooled, recheck the coolant level.

a) pak_wak is wrong, she could have got a worst maintained car.

b)I have a 1984,E 28-520i which I have maintained well.
Honestly,I have never had problems with the car.and have hardly spent more than 1800 dollars on parts.I have given a new coat of same colour external only.Otherwise all are original.Done 169,000 miles todate.
My E39 ,I have not spent any money on repairs yet.
Only spent on tyres and servicing cost.

c)Now I can tell you that your head gasket could have been burnt when your car overheated last.
Or your water pump was faulty, that cost your last tank to crack.Check the thermostat.
another possibilty is that the fan clutch not working or the electric fan for air con condenser is out.
be patient n get checked one by one.

you will overcome.best of luck.
