This could be algae or junk from not having a filter. I suggest you get a filter set-up and that should take care of the problem. It could be algae though if the lights were left on for more than 10-12 hours a day and the fact that you had no filter could have helped cuase algae growth.

For help on algae go to this website

*edit*

Partial water changes of about 25% which would be 2.5 gallons in your ten gallon tank will help and reduce the light for now and if all else fails buy AlgaeFix

It sounds like algae growth from to much light or sun
Do you have your tank near a window where the sun gets in? Because sun is the main factor for algae growth
Also you have to turn your light off at night for at least 12-14 hours and leave it on during the day for 10-12 hours

Did you have a vacation feeder on your tank? If so it might not have worked properly

For right now, do partial waterchanges of 25% every other day, and put water conditioner as directed

Hope that helps
Good luck

sounds like a algae bloom pet stores carry products that can help get rid of this algae most likely with the filter off there was sudden build up of nutrients from the fish waste which cause the the algae bloom do a patrrtial water change to remove some of the algea for several weeks

Someone overfed. Change the water. Leave the green algae. Any other color algae is not good and needs to be removed. Do not put goldfish in any container less than 10 gallons or its cruel.

Do some research on basic fishkeeping techniques. Siphon your gravel, take about 25% of the water out while you siphon. Replace the water and don't feed them so much food. Next time you go somewhere, don't worry about them unless you are going to be gone for weeks.

You MUST replace at LEAST 10% of the water in the tank every week.

maybeu shouldn't had your sis take care because if the tank was brown she really didn't take care of yo fish and the filter always needs 2 be in there 2 take the dirt away so the fish won't die so u should take this advice for real.
