if it disconnects because of the bad rain and thunder we been having? is there a link? or is it because i reformatted the computer? the router is attached to the computer by a wire

The router has nothing to do with your computer, it is a standalone device that requires no interface from a computer at all. It is likely the thunder and lightning are affecting it....

It has nothing to do with your computer unless you have not installed the proper network drivers (for your network card) when you reinstalled.

two things.
1-update your network card and wireless drivers
2-update your routers firmware if you know how.

reformatting your pc has NOTHING to do with your router, i garentee that :)
