I would like to get a hedgehog but I don't know alot about them and would like some general information on them, I also have afew questions:
1. How big of a cage do they need to be kept in?
2. What should I feed it? (I don't like insects so if that is what they eat is there some other food that is good for there diet)
3. Do they get very loyal to people, like if I put him down next to me would he stay near me or on my lap?
4. How easy are they to care for?
5. Do they need any sort of regulat grooming like clipped nails and if so how often?
Any other information is greatly apretiated thank you to anyone who responds!

Hedgies are great!
1. I keep mine in a large rat cage. She has a wheel and some ramps to play on. Make sure you have a hiding place for them because they are nocturnal and will need a nice dark place to sleep during the day.
2. There are some hedgehog diets on the market, but mine doesn't seem to like them. She gets Authority Lite cat food mixed with freeze dried crickets and mealworms. I also give her live worms on occasion. I don't do live crickets though because she has trouble catching them.
3. They can be loyal. I'm the only one that can pick her up. She does not stay by me too much when I get her out. She likes to explore. If its light in the room she will seek out a dark place to hide.
4. She's by far my lowest maintenance pet. I clean her cage every few weeks and make sure her food and water bowls are clean and full. She does get a bath every so often because she's a stinker!
5. I don't clip her nails. They are due though and I've had her for a year now. She runs in her wheel every night for hours and I think that helps them stay trimmed down. I'm going to take her to the vet for that though :)

Just remember that they are nocturnal and they are not active at ALL during the daylight hours. You can wake them up to interact with them, but make sure you are in a quite low lit area as to not startle them. And because they are insectivores when they bite they don't let go (they are used to wiggly bugs). I've only been bit once though.
