A friend is visiting Japan soon. He says he will bring something nice for me, but on top of that, he asked me if there's anything in particular I'd like. Is there anything really nice you have seen over there ? I love most Japanese stuff, ornaments and so, that's why I can't really decide. Your suggestions are most welcome.

Thanks!

Kimono start at around $200 and go to the astronomical. You want a summer YUKATA, which is basically a "summer" kimono -- beautifully colored, light, cotton material with an "obi" sash that goes with a pair of geta or regular summer sandals. It is fairly inexpensive, attractive and unique, and not a fortune. You should also ask for a prettily decorated "uchiwa" paper fan (also fairly inexpensive) to go with the YUKATA and OBI.
I would also suggest a summer wind chime/bell called a FURIN (literally, wind bell) that are delicate, sometimes glass sometimes metal, with a small bead inside that rings against the shell as the wind blows. A paper "tail" hangs from the bell, usually decorated with a Japanese scene or calligraphy. Also very affordable.

For something small (so it's easy to pack and bring back) and decidely Japanese, I'd ask for a kokeshi doll. Kokeshi's are wooden dolls and a traditional Japanese art. They come in all shapes and sizes, with styles particular to certain areas in Japan. There are even ones made to celebrate certain holidays and seasons. I lived in Japan for 7 years and absolutely fell in love with them...I have over 40 of them in my home, ranging in size from 24 inches tall all the way down to smaller than a pill bottle!

Kokeshi are beautiful dolls, and if he can get one carved by a National Treasure, so much the better. or perhaps a dairuma(sp?) doll.. they are for the granting of wishes. Anything origami would be nice too. particularly an origami crane.

Daruma dolls are quite cool, great sized gifts and really interesting. Kimonos cost about $20,000 don't they? I wouldn't ask for one of those...

My advice, something digital. Japan is years ahead of the US in technology. Ask for a special gadget or something
