It depends on what you are looking for. However, I would take these elements into consideration.
1. Popularity
-- May sound superficial, but most plans include unlimited M2M, so it is great to not have to use your minutes when talking to your friends
2. Coverage
-- Most cell phone companies let you have a 30 day grace period to try out their service. I would recommend using this to find the carrier with the best coverage.
3. Price
-- I find that Verizon and AT&T have higher prices than T-Mobile and Sprint on comparable plans. However, this differs on some options.
4. Selection
-- See the selection of phones the carrier has to offer. Sometimes you want a phone with a specific feature, so make sure you go to a carrier with those phones. iPhone can only be used on AT&T.
My current plan is a Sprint SERO plan. I pay $30 for:
-500 minutes
-Unlimited N&W@7
-Unlimited Sprint-2-Sprint
-Unlimited Power Vision Access (internet)
-Unlimited Text Messaging (no longer available)

I think Tracfone is the best company because the phones r prepaid and it doesn't include a contract. It saves money and the phones are from $15 - $49.99. im not exaggerating. Theres a new motoRazar wich is stylish and awesome!!!! Also theres cameras on sertain phones. All the phones include text messaging!!!

I have Verizon and I absolutely think it's worth the money. The service is excellent, and they are always quick to resolve any issues I have. One time I was concerned because I went over my minutes, so I called them and they quickly adjusted the minutes on my plan to include an extra 50 minutes a month for no extra charge so I wound up with a better plan, no extra cost, and no charge for the minutes I had gone over on my original plan. You can't beat that!

it kinda depends on what you want- sprint and verizon are more expensive, but they have the most reliable signals. if you want prepaid, cingular (att) has the gophone, and it's pretty easy to sign up and use. t-mobile has the worst signal quality- you might get dropped calls- i use the gophone- i think it's pretty good too- the only downside- to free phones.
