I didn't begin reading them until I was out of college - but all it took was the first page of "Pride and Prejudice" to get me hooked.

Jane Austen knew how to tell a great, timeless, love story. Why else would we still be caring about what happens to Elizabeth Bennet, Mr. Darcy, the Dashwood sisters and Anne Elliott? I've even heard a good case made for "Pride and Prejudice" being the "original" chick lit novel. (You have an independent heroine, a guy who seems like he's going to be the hero and winds up being the villain and a guy that seems like a villain who winds up a hero, plus a lot of batty sidekicks to provide entertainment along the way.) Actually, if you read "Bridget Jones's Diary", which really did kick off the chick lit revolution, you'll see how much it owes to J.A.

In general, I just love her books and love the movies that are based off on them. I'm getting a little sick of reading books that were "inspired" by her stories - though I seem to keep right on reading them anyway.

Odd enough, I started to re-read "Northanger Abbey." I read that book for college years ago. Then last week, I listened to an author talk about Jane Austen and how she was one of England's greatest writers. Personally, I think she is difficult to read because she doesn't use too many pause techniques in her writing. Yet if the scholars say she's one of the best, I could only believe them.

They're brilliant yet extremly difficult to read.Northanger Abbey is my favourite mainly bevasue of Henry Tilney ^^. I gave them all a go after studying Emma for my A level. I think it's only after a close study do you relise how genius Jane Austen was .I never even bothred with them before.

I just can't read her. It's funny, because I enjoy other authors some finding difficult. But I never could get into Austen. My loss...

Hmmm... I tried to read two of them (Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility) and just couldn't get through them. I don't know why, they weren't too bad. But I sort of drifted away from them... My sister loves them, though. Maybe I should give it another try.
