I have SBC Yahoo DSL, and my modem is a Siemens Speedstream 4100. I connect through a D-Link 604 router, which carries my computer, another computer, and an XBox. I don't know why, but a few times a day, the Ethernet light will turn off on the Speedstream and my whole connection goes down. When I do an ipconfig, it shows my IP as 192.168.1.64 instead of the 192.168.1.101 of my router. Before you ask, I have my modem set to PPP on the modem and my router is set to receive the dynamic IP of the modem. Does anybody know what's going on?

Congratulations!

You have discovered the little secret your Speedstream DSL modem- it's actually a modem/router hybrid which causes disconnect problems when using any router.

The short answer to your problem is to set up your router with a static WAN address of 192.168.1.64. Then make sure the modem is configured for a private, not public IP address (It sounds like it already is)...

Life will be easier if you choose a different subnet for your local network, something like 10.10.1.x instead of 192.168.1.x

This problem is known to occur with the 5100 and 6100 series of DSL modems, I suspect your 4100 is doing the exact same thing.

Here's a more detailed explanation:
