What do you think the result would be?

Martini, I think many people believe that abortion is the most devisive issues in America since Roe vs. Wade. It may be legal now, but with the current makeup of the Supreme Court, this may change. As we continue to lose faith in our elected officials, maybe we should let the American people decide.

It wasn't the Republican Party that took the issue of abortion out of the political arena, where it could have been debated, compromises made, and decided by the people's elected representatives. It was the United States Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade that placed the issue off-limits to the electoral process.

I think you miss the entire POINT.
The American PEOPLE must make the decision as you suggest, but to do that it must be done on the more local level.
The federal government WON'T take responsibility for the abortion decision so the Republicans in general and especially Conservatives want each State to make their own laws regarding the subject and give their State legislators the opportunity to decide without Federal interference.
Since the Constitution say nothing regarding the topic, it is the responsibility of each state to deal with the topic.
That is how our Government works when the Constitution is followed!

The majority of Americans do not support the current availability of abortions, though they also don't support a total ban on abortion.

I don't know of anyone, aside from some extreme liberals, and a particular abortion doctor, who would not support the partial-birth abortion ban, though. It's a heinous procedure, and there is absolutely no case where it is necessary, even to save the mother's life (the whole baby, except the head is already out of her body, and the head has already gone through the only dangerous part of the pathway out of her womb).

Aside from that, our form of government provides for representatives of the people, rather than asking them to get out to vote for national issues.

I have answred this type of question before

I'm 100% behind a womans ability to make medical choices herself. BUT if and I do mean a BIG IF we some how decided that women can not make their own choices when it comes to reproduction I would only agree to it under the following terms:

The government will recognize the fetus as a living member of society. They will become citizens also granting the status of a person eligible for a social security card and allowing the parents of said person to become equally eligible for any and all claims given to parents of dependents who have been born

A national Pro-life list shall be rendered. That list will henceforth be responsible for the housing, health, emotional, and educational care of all unwanted children ( thousands will end up in state run facilities. Just as Pro-lifers balk and paying for abortion I balk at being forced to pay for thousands of children who would not have been born if women were able to make a choice on their own and NO you pro lifers you don’t get a pass you want to abolish it YOU pay for it) The individuals who are on that list will be the sole economic support for children who land in state run facilities. If for any reason the monies collected from said list do not maintain the masses of children born the abortion act will become retroactive once again allowing women to again maintain their right to decide for themselves what is and isn’t best...and the topic will never become a national debate EVER again.

Has nothing to do with any party. The reason would be the same as why we cannot vote for particular immigration laws. Th vast majority of Americans want to have laws already on the books enforced.

I would not oppose a referendum. I am pro-choice for the 1st trimester but I side with the Republicans in regards to many other issues.

Our system doesn't work that way, we don't take a controversial issue and put it to a vote. We elect representatives who appoint judges, confirm judges, etc. I believe by a slight majority the people would vote to end abortion on demand.

Abortion...why someone would want to kill an innocent child is beyond me...they should go through with the pregnancy and give the baby away...
