you click on start and then turn off computer...

Click on the "Start Button" on the bottom/left side of your computer. That will open up a menu and you can then click on "Shut Down".

I don't. all I do is click the close button/the x on the right. then I do the start button if I am shutting down my computer,

You have to click on the start button becasue you have to start the shut down process.
