I have a 1992 Jeep Cherokee Laredo (4.0 liter) and I just had the head gasket changed yesterday. Today I changed out the spark plugs and air filter. I know that the catalytic converter is supposed to be working hard right now because of all the carbon that is going through it now. But whenever I come to a red light, the idle goes REALLY low and the car starts shaking. Also, when I go above 45mph, there's a weird knocking noise, but it doesn't come from the engine. It sounds like it's coming from the exhaust. I've already put in fuel injector/ carburator cleaner in it yesterday (it was acting weird yesterday too). Is this supposed to happen? And if so, when will it go back to normal!?

take it back. If the idle was fine before you took it there it is possible a vacum line is disconnected .Knocking noise is possible from when they reinstalled th y-pipe the didn`t line the exhaust up correcting and it is hitting against something. symptoms of a clogged catalytic converter you would have problems at all range of speeds. Lack of power is a major one

If you replaced the head gasket and smoothed the heads, then you have placed alot more compression for the bottom of you motor. Like the crankcase (crankshaft bearing, etc).

On a 92 you have well over 100,000 miles. It will run wierd for a while if you crankcase can take it. If it smooth out then you maybe good for a few hundred miles before you hear some knocking.

Well if you changed the head gasket I assume that it was blown before,in which case the blown head gasket may have damaged the o2 sensor and/or clogged up your catalytic converter.

No, it's not supposed to happen. Take it back to the shop that did the head gasket. Sounds like the timing is off.

take it back to the mechanic as it should have no symptoms when you got it back, it should run great right off the bat.
