On during the day, off at night. Despite these exact numbers being given, there is no right or wrong. If you leave the light on just in the evening when you are home, say about 5 hours per day, then it will help you to control algae, rather then leaving the lights on for 12 hours, wasting electricity, and getting more algae (unless you have live plants of course). Lighting has no affect on the fishes health one way or another, though if kept long term with no light at all they will pale in colour.

The only reason we have lights for an aquarium is so that WE can see the fish. Unless you have plants that need light. I keep the light off at night and I have it on a timer. (You can find a timer at Home Depot). I decided that my most active time of the day (or when I'm home) is 2pm-9pm. So I set the timer to turn on at 2 and to go off at 9. You could adjust it to whatever time you want you light to go on for. The light is not always supposed to stay on. At night I turn it off so my fish can have a schedule like bedtime. I also feed them at 5pm every day and they have learned to wait at the top of the tank at 5pm for food haha.

You don't want to leave the light on your tank all the time. Algae will start to grow if you leave it on. You want to leave it on about no more than 12 hours a day. I leave mine on in the morning for about 1 1/2 hours and than in after noon for about 6 hours.Weekends when i am home all the time i leave it on a lot longer. I put a link below that you might be interested in. Its about lighting for fish tanks.

In all actuality unplanted freshwater tanks don't require lighting (it's primarily used for tank viewing rather than serving a necessary purpose for the fish). My tank lights come on at around dusk and go off when I go to sleep, if not sooner.
You can turn off the lights whenever you're not viewing your tank.

Turn the light off at night so the fish can sleep in peace. Lights on all the time will stress the fish.

I bought my aquarium light, and never use it. One reason is because when i do use it all my fish just sit their and don't move at all. When i turn it off they all move around happily, Well they are all dark water and nocturnal fish so yea :] It keeps the algae at bay but i do have 2 plecos that i feed algae wafers.

No you do not need to leave the light on all of the time . The light is for night time for your enjoyment to observe your fish when you go to bed you shut it off.

i have a fish tank too, and i turn it on during the day and turn it off at night ..just like you and me fish need to sleep and they need to know when to sleep and when to be up - i think the light eventually will burn the fish out ...so i highly recommend turning it off at night before you go to bed

No. Try to follow a set time for lighting changes. Fish do need sleep, although they seem to be fine without it.
