Using screw eyes or even eye bolts would be less invasive and the tree would grow around them minimizing the risk of disease entering. If you feel you must use the bar to span between branches or trees, just use eyes large enough for the bar to slip through. RScott

Maple syrup producers drill holes into trees all the time--that's where the sap for the syrup comes from. But yes, holes can allow insects or pathogens access to the tree, so you should be aware that there may be some risk involved.

Will not kill the tree directly, but will create a hole through which disease could enter the tree.

You will need to make sure the rod is adjustable to allow for further growth of the tree.

Have to agree with Judy B on this one. Holes in the tree are an invitation to pests and disease... how long to you want to keep your tree? I would consult an arborist on this--some trees may be able to withstand this better than others.

I tell you some of the questions that people ask, 1st go to the garden store for the needed poison. What you propose is extremely dangerous, bleach will burn and blind you when used wrong. Do the best for the tree, if it's in the way of an important progect, well that's to bad for the tree.
