The Blue Lagoon Showers?

Hey, I'm going to Iceland next month and I have happened to hear about when you visit the Blue Lagoon you have to shower to get all the dirt off yourself. Firstly is this compulsary, are the showers altogether (communal) or are there seperate shower rooms per person and lastly they are single sex right? Many Thanks
