It could really be a number of causes. The one could be smaller and being bullied by larger tankmates, it could have an infection/parasite, it could be a heavy-bodied fancy type that's having problems swimming in too strong of a current from the filter, it could be more sensitive to water quality and is feeling effects of ammonia or nitrite in the water, or it could have a swim bladder problem (especially if you notice that it has to struggle to swim up off the bottom).
Try a 25% water change to begin (if you haven't changed the water recently), turn down the flow rate on your filter (there's a knob at the top of the intake tube on most models), and if she's eating, try feeding her food that's been soaked for a minute or so before putting them in the tank, or give it a cooked pea with the skin removed.
Here is some more info on these: http://www.goldfishconnection.com/articles/details.php?articleId=145&parentId=12

If you notice that the scales are sticking out from the body, this is a more serious condition called dropsy: http://www.kokosgoldfish.com/Dropsy.html
It is possible that your fish has eggs, in which case a male in the tank may have been chasing/harrassing her, and she's just trying to find a place to find some peace. Here's a link that will show you how to differentiate between a breeding condition male and female, but the fish will have to be at least a year old for them to show these characteristics: http://www.bristol-aquarists.org.uk/goldfish/info/sexing-fs.htm

This is a sign of stress, not pregnancy. Goldfish do not get pregnant anyway. The bahavior is known as hiding. It is likely sick. If you have a tank smaller than a 55 gallon than the tank is over stocked. Over stocking and poor tank maintenence will stress a goldfish. Goldfish should be active the whole time the lights are on. If not something is starting to go wrong. A large water change works miracles.
First rule applies
Stop feeding and start changing water. If you wait and let the fish keep stressing it will be sick soon.

If a fish likes to skulk in the corners of a tank, this is usually because they are unhappy in some way - whether they have become stressed (water changes) or if they are among plants, they could be laying eggs!
Tropical fish are the hardest to breed though - many a time i've had my fat danio's offload all their eggs, and they get to a millimetre in size (in a sack of about 10) and then they get eaten! Anyway theirs more to it, sorry a little off topic!

Goldfish are egg scatterers and cannot get pregnant. If you are really concerned, have your water tested for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. Correct any high levels, and ask your local fish store for help if you need it.

It is possible that she just wants to be away, and like you said, protect her babies. Or she could simply be because she likes that spot. Nothings wrong with it, she's just different. Good Luck!

How big is your tank? If it is less than 40 gallons, it is probably bad water, an ammonia issue.
