if the check engine light is on have the error codes reads and perform repairs as needed to correct.
if its not on due the following.
first check for a vaccum leak. check vaccum hoses for cracks, breaks and loose fitting.
next check the EGR (exhaust gas receiculation) valve:

Your fuel filter is getting clogged up and the low idle does not give the gas enough pressure to get through it. Less than $10 and less than 10 minutes to fix

Most likely a bad idle air control valve.

low idle speed adjustment, or poorly tuned auto.

Switch to Premium gas for the next 2 fill-ups (to blow out the gunk built up on the lifters), then if the problem persists, you probably need a basic $100 tune up (plugs, distributor cap, rotor, oil change and oil filter)
