Ejecting without pressing stop should have no effect at all on the drive.. when eject is pressed the drive system auto stops.

I suspect another issue is causing your problem. If rebooting doesn't correct it replacing the CD Drive is the easiest solution (they are cheap these days). You can buy "Drive Cleaners" but I have never had any luck with one. When a CD stops reading its time for a new one. Last drive I bought cost me 15.00 at the discount store.

Ejecting a disc while in play back is fine as the drive will stop prior to ejecting. If the drive wont read a disc at all then a cleaning disc will not work as the drive has to read it to tell the user to switch to the cleaning track. Usually track 4. We will try to uninstall and reinstall the drive.

I will assume this is a Windows XP machine.

1. Go to "Start" then right click on "My Computer" select "Manage" This brings up the Computer Management Console.

2. Once in the Computer Management Console, On the left hand side look for and click on "Device Manager"

3. On the right side you will see a list of hardware installed on your computer with plus signs to the left of each one. Look for DVD/CD-ROM drives and click on the plus sign to the left.

4. Now you should see a list of all the DVD or CD drives installed on your computer. Right click on the drive in question and select "Uninstall". This will remove the drive from the hardware list and uninstall the driver

5. Once you have uninstalled the drive, close all open windows, save any open work and restart your computer. Upon restart you will notice a balloon tip appearing near the clock in the lower right hand corner that states "Found New Hardware". At this point Windows is installing a fresh driver for the CD-ROM drive.

Now try to load a CD and see if it works. If the drive still doesn't read a disc then shut down the PC and remove the power cord and remove the side panel or case cover. Check to see that the IDE ribbon cable is firmly connected to the rear of the drive and that the other end is firmly connected to the motherboard. Also check the the ribbon cable for damage. If you see any damage on the ribbon cable you may need to replace it. You can get one at any computer store or repair shop. They are pretty cheap.

If everything looks tidy inside then it is time to replace your drive. If this is only a CD-ROM drive, it would be a good time to upgrade to a DVD/CD burner. With a DVD/CD burner you can watch and DVD's and burn to DVD discs as well as play CD's and burn to CD discs. Now days you can get a good drive for under $50 at Wal Mart.

Here is a link to a good and cheap drive at Wal Mart:

This is a great drive and a great price. It comes with a white and a black face plate and bezel so that you can change it to match your tower. I use an older model (16x) and it has been flawless. Also it comes with software to burn CD's and DVD's as well as a software DVD player program so that you can watch DVDs on your computer.

I hope this helps Good Luck

It's OK to hit eject button (not the pin hole forced eject) on a CD-ROM without hitting "Stop" on a software player. The drive is not going to send the CD spinning out of the unit .

Try a power down and restart, it clears up many issues.

If it is truely "Jacked up", simply replace the drive - they can be had brand new for $20 and probably free if used.

That should not cause a problem i.e. pushing eject while it is still playing.

If you launch a the actual CD player on screen and press the eject button that way, does the draw open?
