Although I like John's idea, I think it is fixable. But the way, this type of carb dose not have a float.
It is most likely the gasket between the diaphram and body of the carb. Try replacing that.
Sounds like the diaphram is drawing too much fuel into the carb, so that part of the carb should be inspected while you are changing the gasket. Make sure the check valves are working properly. If you don't know what I mean, take it to a qualified mechanic.
It may also be flooding because the mixture needles are not set properly, so try resetting them while your at it.

Easy fix. Go to the nearest small engine repair shop with the carburator and tell them that you want a rebuild kit for it. Clean the body of the carb really good and make sure the passages are clear. Reassemble per the instruction with the rebuild kit. It will run like new and cost about $10.00.

i'm a gold qualified stihl technician, i prefer to propose you're taking it to a stihl broker and have them restore it. that being reported the FS45/40 six/fifty 5 string trimmers us a rubber basically gas line. those are hassle-free to place in and eliminate. make confident the cap isn't the place the leak is coming from. no rely if it is barely replace the gas cap and voila, not extra leak. first drain the unit of any gas 2nd eliminate the air clear out assembly, housing and carb (this would grant sufficient unfastened area to artwork the gas line will pull up from the gas tank, basically yank it out as you would be changing it the two gas lines are in a unmarried rubber grommet and easily a million line maintains into the gas tank, eliminate the gas clear out and re-use or replace it. notice it is going to be white in coloration, yellow or green filters would desire to get replaced by using placed on next use some oil on your new gas line assembly and slip it into the gas tank, press firmly alongside with your palms do no longer use kit as they'd puncture you gas line or tank reassemble in opposite of tear down. i'm hoping this works for you, ultimate of success

FIRST IDEA COMMING TO MIND IS THE FLOAT MECHANISM IN THE CARB, SECOND IS THE GASKET...BUT,If IT HAS A FITTING,DISASSEMBLE IT THERE AND TRY PURCHASING A GASKET---OR MAKE ONE WITH A TUBE OF SILICON MAKE-A-GASKET ,EASILY OBTAINED AT ANY AUTO SUPPLY STORE, WAL-MART,ECT---IF NOT THERE, BUT ON ITS' "TANK",BE IT PLASTIC, OR METAL---USE A GOOD EPOXY (2nd-MIX=HARDENER)---ALSO AVAILABLE AT TYPE OF STORES WHERE PREVIOUSLY STATED ----IF IT( THE LEAK) IS LOCATED THE HOSE "FEEDER"--SPLICE OUT THE BAD SECTION ,CLEANLY,& INSERT A SECTION OF TUBE WHICH WILL SERVE AS A CONNECTOR,---AND THEN,CLAMP DOWN THE 2 CONNECTIONS WITH THE SMALLEST SCREW DOWN TYPE OF "RADIATOR CLAMPS" AVAILABLE ON EACH END OF THE COONECTIONS OF FEEDER HOSE & SPLICED IN MINI-TUBE/MINI-PIPE---GOOD LUCK!!!--AND, IF ALL ELSE FAILS---TOSS IT OUT, AND PURCHASE ANOTHER AT WAL-MART,K-MART,COSCO,etc,OR, AT YOUR FAVORITE DISCOUNT CENTER---PLUS,EVER CONSIDER PURCHASING AN ELECTRICAL POWERED WEED-WACKER, IF THE REPAIR EFFORTS FAIL???
