they were trying to take the shuttle off in air but it didnt work because Baldy(Lex luthor) put the krypotonit bit in some water down below. The crystal bit made a big @ss crystal from the water which also took the power out in the city and the plane as well. There was failure to release the shuttle but the shuttle's engines fried the plane thus superman had to come save them.

It was an attempt to avoid using disposable rockets like we currently do.

If the shuttle could initially get into the lower atmosphere via something reusable like a plane (and then fire it's own engines for the trip into space), that's more cost-effective in the long run, and easier on the environment.

I though the effects were great but the movie overall was lame... I believe the biggest bone head decision ever commited to film was Lex Luthor's grand plan.. His new continent is Superman-proof, but nothing prevents regukar army units from ANY nation arriving and obliterating him...

it was actually the other way around they strapped the shuttle to the plane and the did that so that the launch would be easily derived and maybe save the ozone layer while they were at it and that could cut production costs in half if they did that because to build a booster rocket isn't cheap and then to fill it with fuel and oxygen i mean come on

its been a idea for NASA for many years.

They use a plane to transport the shuttle to and from NASA for preperation for flight.

So there was a idea of seeing if they could do away with the fuel tank and booster rockets and use a plane

The air plane is what gets it high into the atmosphere then when it is high enough the rocket launches off of it.
