Just add water and fertalizer

mow the lawn in a cross pattern, like a checkerboard. It stimulates the grass.

Mainly, just add water (morning or evening, not daytime) and fertalizer. when you buy fertalizer they can tell you what type, how often to use. and wat not.

Start with a soil test. Local university extension centers can provide you with the test kit. It's easy, a few samples of top soil from around the yard mixed together. When the results come back follow the instructions. Usually, a good application of liquid iron, a time release fertilizer and proper watering will do the job. Hot weather is a consideration when applying fertilizer. Too much nitrogen will kill the grass in summer. Also, insects can be destroying the roots. A lot depends on what area of the country you live in. Apply a winterizer in the fall and a good high nitrogen dose in the very early spring combined with an herbicide. In the heat keep the grass mowed at a height of two inches. Weeds love short grass. Proper watering is critical. Water between 6 am. and 9 a.m.. Never at night. Night time watering promotes fungus. It's like going to bed with wet clothes on. Good Luck.

There are a few basic gardening practices that you need to do during the growing season to keep your turf looking healthy and green. Every 4 to 5 weeks you need to apply a fungicide evenly across the lawn to control any diseases that may be present such as, leafspot, brown patch, rust, etc. Ortho's product called "Multi-Purpose Fucgicide (Daconil2787) is the best product on the market and can be obtained in a concentrate form from any Walmart, Home Depot, or Lowes garden center. Nextly, since you say your lawn dries up in the heat of summer, you need to "Aerate" your lawn before summer time heat comes. Aerating is usually done in late spring, and you can rent an aerating machine at any leading garden center for a few dollars. It will only take about an hour to do this and is easy to do. By core aerating and taking out "plugs" of turf, you are allowing water and fertilizers to reach the root zone of the grass, making it easier for it to get all the needed nutrients and moisture, for a healthy lawn. You also to need to follow through with a fertilizing program on a every 5 to 6 weeks application program. "Scotts" makes a few good lawn fertilizers that are "slow" release and sulphur coated, that will last for a month or more. If you have any weeds present in the lawn you can get a "weed and feed" mixture. This will take care of any weeds while at the same time give your lawn a shot of much needed food. Lawns need alot of moisture to keep them healthy and green so you should not be chinsy with your watering practices. Water every other day for about an hour depending on the severity of your temperatures. Early morning is the best and safest time to do this. You'll want to water "deep and long" so that the moisture gets down 4 to 5 inches. This will cause the roots to grow down deep to reach this moisture level and promote good root development. This will help the grass withstand the hot temperatures of summer, and will cause less "drought" stress on your turf. If you follow these few, simple practices throughout the growing season, your neighbors will be envious of your golf course looking lawn. Hope this answers some of your questions..

Be sure to use a mulching mower, not a bag. This will help retain moisture in the soil. A good fetilizer program to start is offered by Scott's. On the back of the fertilizer bag there is a chart you can follow which tell you times you should start and what to use when. Always water in the late evening (dark).this keeps the sun from drying out the soil too soon. Scotts program has worked really well for me.
