It's beyond me how people always pick Cy Young on this one. To me, it's not very close. Not one of the people who saw both pitch would ever choose Cy over Christy. In fact Cy was never mentioned in MVP voting, Christy was four times. But I'll let th numbers speak for themselves:

Cy Young: 22 seasons, 5 30-Win seasons - 3 20-loss seasons, 2803 k's - 210 one year, 76 SHO - 10 one year, 14 seasons with less than 1 H/Inn., 2.63 lifetime ERA - .87 one year, 3.62 league and ballpark adjusted era (lERA)

Season avg: 20-12, 290 IP, 110K, 2.63 ERA (3.62 lERA), 1.13 WHIP

Christy: 16 seasons, 4 30-win - 0 20-loss, 2502 K's - 267 one year, 79 SHO - 11 one year, 13 seasons with less than one hit per inning (two years he missed it by one or two hits), 2.13 life ERA - 1.14 one year, 2.88 lERA

Season avg: 21-10, 274 IP, 143 K, 2.13 ERA (2.88 lERA), 1.06 WHIP

Postseason stats:

Cy Young: (World Series and Championship Series) 2-3, 61IP, 2.36 ERA, 26 K, 57 H, 7BB. Won in 1903, Loss (CS) in 1892

Christy: 5-5, 101 IP, 0.97 ERA, 48 K, 76 H, 10BB, 10 CG. Won in 1905; Losses in 1911, 12, and 13.

So you can even say Christy had a much bigger postseason impact also.

Correction: Cy's best ERA season was 1.26, not .87 as mentioned above.

Christy would never pitch on Sundays..he was like Sandy Koufax of the Dodgers.whot never pitched on Saturdays

both were the best of their day

Cy Young bounced around from team to team..
Christy only played on 2..and fought in WWI and was hurt..cutting his career shorter than Youngs

People that pick Cy Young over (either) Matthewson or Johnson do so on two points.

"there is an award named after him, he has to be the best, right" and
He won 511 games. wow

Johnson won 417 games and none in the 1800's, where the bulk of Youngs wins were before 1901.
As much as we say the rotations today are 5 man, in Johnson's time they were 4 man and in a lot of Cy Youngs times, they were 3 man rotations.

While I would put Mathewson over Young, I would put Johnson over both.

If you just looked at games won you could make an argument for Young, But I believe most historians would go with Matthewson.
