New movies are supposed to come out on Fridays. But all of a sudden, theaters have started releasing movies on Tuesdays. Why? What was wrong with Fridays?

Transformers came out on Tuesday, Harry Potter is going to come out next Tuesday, License to Wed was released yesterday (Tuesday), that animated rat movie came out yesterday, Evan Almighty came out last Tuesday, etc, etc, etc. It seems that every movie from the last 3 weeks was released on a Tuesday rather than a Friday.

Money, and if it is a big one like Transformers, it can try and break the record for a Tuesday opening, like Transformers did. The Movie gets a bigger first week paycheck if it starts earlier in the week.

I think Evan Almighty was released on June 22, which was a Friday. I do think releasing a movie on July 3 is related to the holiday. Beyond that, I think the answer is similar to the comment about box-office records. I think they're trying to maximize their chances of opening as the #1 movie of the weekend, since they'll have a few extra days.

They show them at midnight, so it's 'legally' Wednesday. If a holiday (such as the 4th) falls on a Wed., then they can show them BEFORE midnight on tuesday, if they choose and the distributor lets them. I remember the first time they ever showed a movie at midnight, it was 'Batman Returns' and they showed it on a thursday at midnight, so it would 'legally' be friday...lol This went over really well and they made more money. So eventually, every BIG release (movies with lotsa hype) would come out Midnight Thursday. Then by the late 90s/early 2000s, this did so well they started Tuesday Midnights. :-)

They usually only release movies on Tuesdays if it is around a Major Holiday. Typically they will release on a Friday or a Wednesday.
DVD's always release on a tuesday.

It's a new way of creating new 'box office records', as the takings are added to the weekend-gross.
