There are plenty of facts that Valerie Plame was outed because her husband, Joseph Wilson, criticized President Bush for the lie that former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein bought nuclear weapons-grade uranium in the African nation of Niger.

Another fact is that Bush effectively pardoned Scooter Libby after he was found guilty of perjury. What is not a known fact is whether Bush was trying to protect himself, Rove, Cheney, and others from a tell-all book, or just carrying on the Republican tradition of pardoning their criminal friends, for example Nixon pardoned by Ford, several who illegally sold arms to Iran pardoned by Bush senior, a suspected terrorist pardoned by Bush senior.

Actually, I don't want Libby or anyone else who is not an immediate danger of harming others sent to our prisons. It is a fact that we incarcerate more people per capita than any other democracy in the world.

Many politicians who want to be seen as being tough on crime are being dumb on crime and the rest of us are paying. Paying millions of dollars for unreasonably long sentences and paying by being less safe when inmates are released--as most will be.

We would be much safer having ex-cons in our communities that had opportunities for learning life and job skills and who have access to support while they transition to life on the outside, than those who become more rotten while they are left to rot in our present inhumane prisons.
