SHOCK MOUNTS
Shock mounts on BMWs fail pretty easily. I recommend you use Meyle's heavy duty shock mount as opposed to the stock ones.

From bavauto.com:
Meyle’s heavy-duty rear shock mount has an internal flange that disperses pressure more evenly, eliminating a common failure area of the stock mount.
The sound it makes is more like 2 pieces of loose metal washers rattling. It has no negative effects, just annoying.
Changing it out is quite straight forward. But you need 2 jacks. One to hold the car up, one to gently lower the rear axle to allow the removal of the shock mounts.

Mine did the same thing. Mine was caused by the 2 parts of the control arm rubbing together over bumps because the bushing was worn out and had worn down enough so that the control arm parts were touching. I could see the difference by looking at the other side and seeing that there was a lot more clearance between them than on the side making the sound.

Did you change the rear shock upper mounts? And how much stuff do you have in the trunk? Sway bar links and exhaust mounting are about the only other things besides worn out bushings and sub frame mounts. Good luck.

there is a rubber mounting to the rear of the exhaust which holds the back silencer to the under body, it is very probably well weathered and perished so has lost its elasticity take the vehicle to an exhaust fitter and they will fit a new one for you, minimal cost. maclaren.

Could be rear anti roll bar links. Check for play with a pry par or something similar.

I think the previous poster meant bushings.
could be either in the control arms or sway bar if it has one in the rear
