Ad aware is nice but not enough to use by itself. I agree that most anti-virus suites slow down a PC but if you clean out the registry, defrag it and clean out the cookies and spyware you'll notice an improvement. I've used Norton Internet Security for 5 years and have had just 1 virus that the software found immediately. It works.

TECH is correct, AD-aware is NOT an anti-virus product. It only detects spyware.
Try AVG as recommended or f-secure.
You want an AV/spyware/malware program that can detect root-kits. None of the major AV suppliers do that.

The fact that your computer is running slow may very well have nothing to do with your antivirus program. Try installing more memory and see if it speeds up any. I would also suggest that you use AVG antivirus in addition to Adaware. This is what I install on all the systems that I build for clients.

ad-aware is not anti virus. yes get an anti-viruses program like avg asap. if u only have ad-aware, its a good chance u might already have a virus. getting a virus is not an easy thing 2 do. u have to go to very shady sites, or open email attachements from ppl u dont know.

If your PC is slowing down, or acting strangely, it's probably infected with malware. Use the link below to learn more about "malware".
Then, you need to install:
ONE Anti-virus (delete ALL others, I use AVG free),
http://www.free.grisoft.com/doc/downloads-products/us/frt/0?prd=aff
ONE Firewall (Zone Alarm),
http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/company/products/trial_zaFamily/trial_zaFamily.jsp?dc=78lts&ctry=CA&lang=en
Or:
http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/promotions/vista/index5.html (Vista):
AND these 5 Anti-Spyware tools:
Windows Defender
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Spybot Search and Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
Ad-Aware 2007
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php
Spyware Blaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/downloads.html
cCleaner (technically, not anti-spyware, but very useful)
http://www,ccleaner.com
I use all regularly. Download them, install them and learn how to use them (HINT: Use the Help TAB). (Need more help? Re-post.)
TIP: The apps above can only clean up so much.
As a last resort, back up all personal data from your PC (copy to CD / DVD / external hard drive) and do a Windows "Clean Install" (for instructions go to: (www.theeldergeek.com).
Note: You must use your Recovery disks, if included with your PC, to avoid driver problems, not a store-bought XP. The Recovery disks may be ON the hard drive, so Read The Friendly Manual FIRST.

I see the AVG fanboys and cheerleaders are out in full force again here on Yahoo Answers!
AVG Free is crap!
Mostly noobs, the naive, the computer illiterate, and children use AVG Free. These types love AVG because they say it is easy to use and almost never bothers them with any pop-ups or warnings. Of course AVG Free never bothers them, it hardly ever finds any virus to warn them about!
In test,
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82
after test,
http://www.av-comparatives.org/
after test,
http://antivirus.about.com/od/antivirussoftwarereviews/gr/avgfree.htm
after test ,

after test,
http://techsupportalert.com/issues/al_current.htm#Section_0,
after test,
http://winnow.oitc.com/AntiVirusPerformance.html
etc. etc. etc, ad nauseam, AVG fares poorly.
AVG has proven itself to be a miserable performer at best. Missing almost 20%, while trying to detect known malware, in some tests. Not to mention almost non-existent heuristic detection and infrequent "once-a day" updates.
AVG. = Average, at best!
There are much better free alternatives such as Avria Anti-Vir:
http://www.free-av.com/
and Active Virus Shield:

Ad-Aware is NOT an antivirus program! It is only for spyware removal..not viruses. So, in a nutshell, you are unprotected.
Try AVG (free) - http://free.grisoft.com
-or
Avast (free) - http://www.avast.com
Both are good virus scanners.
