I also wanted to add - FREE. What motivated me to post this question was that I saw 'Sicko', Michael Moore's new movie last night. Although, he does go to the edge he made some great points.

I am wondering what would it take to get Healthcare equivalent to France or the UK here in the States?

It seems it would not be easy, but there has to be a glimmer of hope!

Thanks all.

I don't know how it could be done. But honestly, if a country like Cuba (which is one of the poorest countries in the world), can give their people Universal Health Care, then why not America. It makes me sick that this country doesn't think enough of its's people to take care of them all. And why do terrorist get better healthcare then we do on American Soil. That makes me sick.

"having a universal healthcare in the the united states would just grant more power to our government that already has ENOUGH power."
This is one of the previous answers to this question. If you take a look at the section in the movie that talks about the french in particular you will see the difference. French people will not have the government dictate what happens. The French people will not tolerate not having universal health care.
The people of the USA has given the power to the government. They have alowed the government to spend a trillion dollars fighting in iraq when people are literaly dieing because they can't afford a hospital visit. The people in this movie were real, and they are neighbours.
Most of the people who do not agree with universal health care in the USA are people who can afford adiquate health insurance. They are comfortable, why should they care if billy down the road can't afford to have his fingers sewn back on- or if John's wife is dieing of cancer?
Another think keeping americans from "socialised health care" is they think that will make the USA a comunest country. They fail to realise (as it shows in Sicko) that the police department, fire department, and public library are all socialist programs.
Lets just imagine for a second the fire department became a private organisation.
Your standing on your front lawn and a fireman comes up to you with a form.
"hi there, I'm just here to talk about your options. We can save each of your family members for x dollars each, pets for Y dollars each, and start putting out the fire for Z dollars an hour - please sign here.
"oh well that would save us money though!"
This whole debate makes me so angry. Why is there even a debate?

It is a matter of society getting organized..
So far, the government has behaved in a paternalistic manner, handling ALL health issues of the USA population, and the reason why NOT everyone in the country, has the access to proper Health Systems, is government maladministration....
There a lot of useless research programs, and very many projects that fail, (mainly in State linked and supported Universities) and costed a LOT of money to the taxpayer, that we cant count the wasted money, the government has put money into.....On the other hand, the resources spent in a health system such as that of the UK, and Cuba, Sweden and Holland, that covers the entire population, would consume about 1.2 % (one point two percent) of the gross national anual product of the USA...It could be affordable if our constituents and congressional lobbyists were REALLY concerned about providing health to the population, instead of feeding the obese bureaucratic apparatuses of Medicare and Medic Aid--Etc -so I guess, a very, very, very long time will elapse before we equal those country with more economical ways and eficient ones, to provide health care to its people..
By the way, in the surveys of the last 5 years, do you know what the main motivation of students is, for engaging into studying medicine???
Its not vocation.,,. Its a lot of bucks,,,greed in a single word...
What can we expect of our system?...not much I suppose.

If you are a Californian then you would know that there is free health care!!!
That is if you are an illegal immigrant that crossed the border and you have a million kids and another one on the way.
I am not racist by any means, but our government gives all our resources to other countries and does not give enough to their own people. It would probably be possible if they would stop doing this so much. I really don't know what the quality of care would be though. They base everything know on the type of insurance you have. I just know things could be and should be alot better for Americans today.

Maybe possible, but also a horrible idea. In the interest of brevity, I'll put it this way: you get what you pay for.

Also, as soon as the government gets involved in something, it costs more and is far less efficient. I don't want a bureaucrat making medical decisions for me!
