The United States of America is a great country, still free, still imperfect, but still the best hope for the vast majority of those in the world who live in hunger, poverty or fear.
Our nation is generous to a fault, but weakened by bickering and name-calling. I am 66 years old. I was born in the early years of a great war that our country had not yet been drawn into. I grew up in a time when every able-bodied male was expected to serve in the Armed Forces, and I spent ten years on active duty in the Air Force.
My combined reserve forces service (Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve) extend my total service time to an incredible 41 years. It saddens me that the vast majority of Americans today have not served in uniform, and that includes political leaders, the news media, most of the CEO's and others who are influential in today's society.
I am not a great person or a great American because of my uniformed service, but I am an American who better appreciates what it means to be a citizen of this country, and I am an American who understands that being an American is not just taking, but giving as well.
We don't have to be in the Armed Forces to serve our nation and its people. Many good Americans have found other ways to help this be a greater and better place.
We need to lay aside our Republican, Democrat, Libertarian and other labels for this day and be Americans. And we need to thank those who have served. (I am always grateful to those whose service involved a far greater sacrifice than mine did--because I can appreciate what that sacrifice means to me today.)
If you are an American today and call yourself that and hold your head up high when you hear the National Anthem or see the flag, I honor and respect you and join you.
Let us all work together to make it better. If we have not already begun, let us begin today.

We can hope but there will be some of those anti-war, anti-Bush, anti-whatever, and anti-whoever people out in the streets today because they will get a lot of media attention. As long as they get attention they are happy-nothing has to change-just getting some tv cameras on them makes their day.

You got it Patricia! Lets just enjoy what this day represents. While we argue over politics, the parties do their thing and we fight and bicker. Lets just be Americans and have one day that unites us all! We can disagree, but not today. That is the freedom we can enjoy.

Great idea. Wouldn't it be great if we could put our political "teams" in second place everyday.
Seems we forget we are Americans first and repubs and dems second.
Remember what A.Lincoln said, " A house divided cannot stand".
